All About the Scary Fairy

I'm Cris Hamilton, a pretty darned normal woman despite what Meiers-Briggs says.

I imagine you've come to this page to either 1) see just how scary the woman behind Scary Fairy actually is (some days are worse than others) or 2) find out if I have any sway with the fairy world. (I don't.)

I'm a writer who spent a long time working on projects that bridge the space between business and local culture. Eventually, I wandered into web stuff and web graphics and animation. And THEN Scary Fairy bobbed her way into the picture.

Scary Fairy was a pretty simple idea: people can not guess what we're thinking, feeling, or wanting. It would be nice, but they can't. And worse, they won't.

If you want them to know, you have to tell them. Of course, some of us are shy. Some are afraid of being thought confrontational. The prospect of saying it out loud - for a multitude of reasons, makes a lot of us nervous.

Scary Fairy, though, doesn't bat an eye. It's just a little bit of truth. How scary is that?

Nooooo. What about Scary Fairy???!!! Oh.

Scary Fairy's half way between the fairy that works with teeth and those tiny ones who dart around in woods, guarding the jewels they got for getting the princess her latest boyfriend.

Scary Fairy isn't as famous as the first and isn't as rich as the latter, but she's doing okay.

It's true, at first she thought she'd been cheated. When they flung open the trunk of magic, she waited politely while the others grabbed the dazzling bits. (To this day, she's terrible at Clearance Sales - she wanders off to the cafe around the corner for a little slice of chocolate cake.)

But she got on with what they gave her, and became really good at doing her job and raising an interesting family and loving friends through hard and happy times and showing up for others' events and trying out as much of life as she could squeeze in - and doing it all with a pretty damned good sense of humor. She was working her little wings off (her butt, inexplicably, is still big and her chest, still flat).

On the way, she discovered her magic.

The other fairies, who disappoint so many when they don't do precisely what's expected of them, do precisely what's expected of them and get pretty cranky about it. Scary Fairy has ideas all her own. She knows the rules and which ones just don't work in real life - well, at least not for her.

So, when you try and tell her what she ought to be? Our little Scary Fairy will snap. She doesn't have to be anything anyone thinks she should be. And she's saying so. Politely. That's her magic.

It's magic she's happy to share with you.

Scary Fairy tales are available in postcards, notecards, and greeting cards, and t-shirts are on the way!
